Professor Hong K. LO is Department Head and Chair Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of GREAT Smart Cities Institute of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His expertise includes dynamic transportation system modeling, traffic control, network reliability, and public transportation analysis. He has published extensively in the transportation literature and was selected as one of the Most Cited Researchers in Civil Engineering in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2016. Professor Lo is a Fellow of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Highway and Transportation (IHT), and Fellow of the Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies.

GREAT Smart Cities: Sustainable Smart Campus 

Abstract

The development of smart cities is an emerging and important research and development direction worldwide. Recently, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has established the GREAT Smart Cities Institute, which focuses on advancing five GREAT attributes of smart cities development, namely Green, Resilient, Empowering, Adaptable, and Transformative, as described as follows: (1) Green: city planned with due considerations for life-cycle environmental impacts, natural resources consumption (e.g. air, water, energy, materials) and wastes generation and treatment; (2) Resilient: city developed with infrastructure capacities and system redundancies to manage disruptions without severely affecting their essential functioning; (3) Empowering: city designed for people, empowering wellbeing, efficiency, innovation, and productive partnerships; (4) Adaptable: city designed with their infrastructure and systems adaptable to changes in new technology (e.g. autonomous vehicles) and global warming; and (5) Transformative: city designed for empowering their institutions and citizens to define and reposition their growth directions and strategies. This presentation will discuss GREAT attributes and learning experiences via the Sustainable Smart Campus (SSC) as a Living Lab initiative at HKUST.
